Contemplative Space and Architecture of Senses

Studio V. Spring 2021. Lead by Prof. Juana Gómez-Delgado

Professor Gomez-Delgado, challenged our studio class to think about what is a Contemplative Space and how it can be presented. I researched the site and decided on the location of the contemplative space, I have chosen an area that is mostly surrounded by trees. My main concept was to preserve the surrounding nature, as trees give the feeling of serenity and privacy. I believe nature and the outdoors promote the feeling of contemplation.

Program

The area is divided into three primary zones. The perimeter is enveloped by trees that form a distinctive pathway, guiding visitors into the contemplative space. Within this contemplative area, rammed-earth walls and wooden beams are incorporated to immerse individuals in a natural and serene ambiance. To further enhance the sense of tranquility, an exterior waterfall is positioned at the center of the space.

Site Plan

The site currently lacks a connection with the "natural environment" as it's surrounded by a mix of old and new buildings, devoid of any natural elements. To preserve a connection with nature, I've integrated trees to shape the pathway leading to the building, ensuring the presence of nature is maintained.

Materiality and Senses

The design thoughtfully integrates materials like grass, wood, and rammed earth to engage the senses. These materials offer varied tactile experiences, from the smoothness of wood to the textures of grass and rammed earth. They also evoke natural scents, such as the aroma of grass and water. The design enhances the sensory experience with sounds like rustling trees and flowing water, creating a rich and immersive environment.
